Denis Albrecq

Research activities :

Denis's PhD research focuses on the development of a highly coherent pulsed optical source based on fibre cavity solitons for distributed fibre-optic sensing. The main goal is to exploit the properties of optical solitons to generate stable, coherent pulses that can be used in phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (Φ-OTDR). The research aims to demonstrate an improvement in spatial resolution compared with existing approaches, with a target resolution in the millimetre range.

Biography :

Denis Albrecq received his Master's degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Mons (UMONS) in September 2026. During his Master's studies, he completed his Master's thesis at McGill University (Canada), on the characterization of intra-subject performance load in trombonists. He received the ACAPELA Prize for this work.
In July 2026, he joined OPERA-photonics at ULB as a PhD researcher. His doctoral research focuses on the development of coherent optical soliton sources for high-resolution distributed fibre-optic sensing. His PhD is jointly conducted with UMONS.
